I've been told that another manufacturer suffering from rust on suspension and underneath items is Toyota in particular the Yaris and the Avensis. New cars today don't last as long due to all the electronics and unnecessary gadgets that are bolted on, it's common to see 8-9 year old cars (and younger) in scrapyards today. Plus the build quality is no longer there.

Rust proofing improved in the late 80's early 90's but it's now poor again. Jaguar, Land/Range Rover, BMW, Ford, Volkswagen, Mazda & Mercedes Benz are some of the worst. Peugeot, Renault and Citroen being the best for resisting rust (they just die from electrical faults before their 8th birthday).

Mercedes Benz no longer have the quality they once did and seem to rust everywhere. Also keep an eye out for VW Golf MKV's (2004-2009) with rotted through front wings (although rust isn't their only problems).

It's sad that manufacturers are going backwards in terms of rust protection, most of us went through this years ago with Fiat, Lancia and quite a few other brands..

Last year I bought a KIA Sedona also known as the Carnival, great motor space wise and it was a project car I prepared for our holiday, did tonnes of work on it finally sent in to my local guy to fit a cam belt kit and water pump. They called me to say they couldn't do it as the mechanic had sheared the engine mount bolts..

On the rust have a look at the sills after I cut it open:

It may well have been used to tow a boat where it’s in the water on the slip road accelarating corrosion and may explain why the rest of it looked in good condition.

One of the local garages is advertising a scrappage scheme for cars older than 7 years it’s nuts plenty of life left in them although If build quality keeps going back the way then that maybe all they’ll last.

I agree, I often think the same. However I have to say my French cars have been exceedingly reliable in all respects.

Think some of the older French cars were quite good engine wise but build quality now is pretty poor IMO..

Hi.
My first car a 1960 Beetle bought in 1971 was pretty rusty, the sills were poor, no running boards due to this, rear bumper mounts rusted away. All got fixed though by my friendly neighbour who was a brilliant welder.
My next car a Mini was 8 years old on purchase and had already two new wings, rear subframe and sills, nice car though. Next was an Anglia van with a holed floor, after that an Imp van that was rust free at 8 years old, it though was unreliable with cooling issues. Then I had a load of Skodas from the 1000mb to a Felicia, some different cars in between. The Skodas were average not really any worse or better than other makes of the time for rust. Only when I got an Audi 80 did I see any improvements, it was by far the best. A few BMW's were terrible 2002, 518 by far the worst rosters I've come across.
My 2014 Panda is remarkably good, they have one known weakness, it's the rear spring cups on the beam, mine are perfect but I have sprayed them a couple of times with rustproof spray and I keep the car clean and do the underside monthly, also washed behind the arch liners a couple of times this year.

Interesting posts above.

I started in around 1968 with a Morris Minor second hand, and soon after passing my test went after a Vauxhall Cresta, just loved big cars, had a few Zephyr's then a succession of Mini's one a Cooper which I did a swap for a Triumph TR2, then swapped for another Mini.

After that had all kinds of cars including a Dodge Custom Royal with push button auto select gears. It wasn't until many years later when I bought my first new vehicle a Metro van.

Then over the years had a 4.2 Jag, two new Renault Espace and a VW Transporter van costing circa 17K with VAT, rear wipers split back doors etc.Had a collection of Alpha's.

Again years later a whole range of second hand cars some good some bad but mainly good, especially the Saab's none rusty one bit.The KIA was the rustiest car I've bought for long time.

Now I don't value any used car past £400, due to cost of parts, after the 75 Tourer came my current driver a VW Passat 2.0 s 20 valve petrol only 83K miles, just had to replace the passenger window regulator and a back door has deadlocked parts on ebay quite cheap, leaks water in to both foot wells German engineering my bum

A strange thing, the VW had a rust hole about 2" in the middle of the front wheel arch, when I dug it out there was a sponge/foam strip right were the rust hole was, I've noticed a few more like it on the road. The KIA rotten sills pic above also had a foam/sponge strip right were it rotted out, obviously collects and holds water. Is it a design fault or what?

As my garage is up to the roof in junk I usually work outside, I'm waiting until next spring to buy another 75 or MG

Hi John.
How funny life is with cars. I've had a few British cars and a lot of foreign ones. In shear numbers of the foreign one's in order are these.
Skoda, Citroen, BMW, Audi, Fiat, DAF, Lada, Nissan.
Of the British ones in order it's, Rover/MG, Ford, Reliant, Austin, Commer Imp van.
Now I was slated so many times for the Skodas but never had one single breakdown in them, the DAF, Audi and Fiats also were trouble free, the BMW, Lada and the Nissan a primera being less than good, the Nissan being the worst car I've owned.
Of the British ones, the Ford's were well below average, worn engines at low mileage, rust and many other issues, far worse than any of my many Skodas were. The mini and a short time with an 1100 were brilliant years ahead of Escorts and MK 1 Fiestas. Although the Imp was a wonderful car, nippy, good handler and great on fuel the cooling system was a joke. If they had taken the radiator out of where it was and put it where Skoda had theirs in the MB & S series it would never have got all the road dirt reducing airflow, one overheat on the Imp and it was curtains for the head and often for the block.

Anymore updates on this thread? Interesting read so far.
Would like to know how the MG3 is getting on and if anymore owners have stories to tell.
