I think the horn need to be operative when the ignition is off. Audio control are ignition sensitive so a relay mounted in the steering wheel might work.

I will wait for a dry weekend to turn up before looking into it, I will need to take some voltage readings to see if 12 volts is present at the horn buttons or it just switches ground. The horn works independently of the ignition as you must be able to use it at any time that it may be required, so thinking about it maybe the horn is not such a good idea as the LED's would remain on after the car is locked up, I have also noticed the the stalks are also made from the same white translucent plastic.

The left buttons are analogue controls for ice, brown and green wires are used for this also ground goes to the PCB.

Measurements taken across green and brown

Volume down 0 Ohms when pressed
Volume up 390 ohms when pressed
Mode 3.2K when pressed
Select down 1.6k when pressed
Select up 860K when pressed

Horn switches ground to make the circuit, so there is no 12 volts there, there are unused pins on the connector so it would be a case of running ignition switched 12 volts through it; but it seems easer to say it than to do it.

Been thinking about this myself for a while. I'll maybe give it a try when I'm next on nights

I've been down the road of trying to illuminate the controls.

If you have cruise fitted then it;s a no - no as on the rotary coupler, there are 6 connections which are all used.

An LED will be enough as the are pained black over an opaque plastic. There is just about enough room to mount the LED on a fly lead in the plastic housing.

Very interesting, I have thought about this myself and I have some Blue LED's on a fly lead.

I did something similar on a different car, I ended up splicing in to the gauge lighting circuit running the new feeds through the rotating coupler to the stereo controls.
As said above though you will need a spare line through the coupler.
