Default Non - 75 query (Rover 45)

My 75 is currently off the road so I thought I'd MOT my 1.4 45, which has been sitting on SORN for a year.

Failed on emissions - namely, a CO reading of 7.22% vol - over twice the legal limit. The HC reading was ok at 327 ppm.

Is driving fine but the engine check light is on (not flashing though - the handbook says it is ok to drive with it like that). Plugs, leads, air filter, coils etc all in good order.

Any suggestions why it has failed?

If it were me I would replace both CAT and Lambda sensor.

Andy,

Did it pass the MOT on emissions prior to SORN? If so, I'd start by checking the electrical connections in the lambda sensor circuits. When cars lie idle for extended periods the electrics become damp or the contacts become degraded.

Stuck a new pre-cat lambda sensor in and checked the inlet manifold nuts. One was a tad loose. Don't know which sorted the problem but the 45 passed its retest today. CO down to 0.4% and HC to 37ppm. Hurrah!
