Default Nissan about to do a runner!

Blimey! "Nissan reportedly wants to withdraw from Europe and instead focus more on its main markets: the USA, China and Japan. The news comes through sources of Reuters and also includes repercussions on the alliance’s e-mobility offering"

Another push for some more sweeetners from the government methinks, they have a history of doing this, remember the ‘move to India’ a few years ago?

Ive just driven passed the Nissan plant. It’d been a good employer for Sunderland, I’m afraid the future looks bleak. Toyota said they will go if they loose the single market, let’s hope we create good manufacturing jobs to replace them, rather than minimum wage, zero hour type employment.

Sounds more like an empty threat to me. If they truly needed the single market, then how were they able to survive when there wasn't one?

Aw, I was so looking forward to buying a new Datsun Puke too

They should move out quickly, then the government can compulsorily purchase the factory and adjacent land to expand the newly opened Nightingale Hospital next door, just in case

Would I be sad to see it go? we will see when it happens

I for one would be happy for Renault to manufacture cars at Washington. There are no UK car manufacturer to step in so if this happens it will be a good solution. That’s not to say I’m a fan of Renault, I’m not, similarly with Nissan products, for me it’s all about manufacturing jobs. Our French friends may yet come and support us, don’t mention the ‘monkey hangers’ not overly far from Washington.

When this thread was first posted I had heard that the Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi collaboration may be behind it. In these changing times car manufacturers are contracting and it makes some sense to look at your markets. Nissan and Renault are in competition for the same demographic customers.

The chassis and engines between the two are becoming more and more unified so it seems commercial sense to reduce competition between them and concentrate on their stronger markets, Nissan the far east and USA, Renault Europe. Trading only in these areas has the potential to maximise each manufacturers profits by eliminating one major competitor. After reading earlier this week that Renault may manufacture in Sunderland I think this scenario may be starting to play out.

Another reason may be Brexit, tariffs are becoming more likely but at the same time the UK is a very important market to trade in. I have heard that some European manufacturers are keen to keep manufacturing in the UK for the UK markets mainly and I can see this a big motivator to keep Renault selling in the UK.
