the converter I got from tomabo.com was a trial. I did not realise this so am trying http://www.videotovideo.org/ as suggested by Fifer. Seems to be working ok but has taken me some time to work out what was going on. At first I could not get the mp4 file that it created to run but that was because it was still converting to mp4.

I tend to keep to the original video size 720 x 480 for instance for my VHS camera files, and keep the video bitrate at between 2,000 to 4,000 for the best quality. I prefer to convert to WMV files and do the final editing (titles etc) in Sony Vegas. If you hit any snags PM me.
