Powerfold motor replacement?
I’ve posted in the general forum about my experiences of trying to fix my powerfolds, where I followed Trebor’s excellent guide to replacing the little internal gears, but sadly it didn’t fix my problem.
So… does anybody have experience of replacing the actual motor? I see things like this available on eBay, and wondered if that might do the trick…

A new motor "lid" may be a solution?
Hi Roger,
I'm not sure if you will be able to use those motors. Rob (Trebor) will probably be best to advise. I followed Robs instructions and had a similar problem but mainly due to using an eBay purchased set of cogs which were pretty rubbish. Too soft. I bought a "proper" set but still had a problem. It was the "lid" of the motor that had worn slightly where the cog fitted. There is a solution in the instructions about a "sleeve" being inserted to close the gap but that wasn't an option at the time I did mine. To cut a long story short, I purchased a new "lid" for the motor and fitted that and the new cogs to my mirror and all working fine. I'm sure I posted some details/photos on one of the threads about Powerfold Cogs ... have a look or let me know and I'll try to find the details/photos in the depths of my previous laptop! Good luck John

Thanks John - I used the gears that somebody (Rob?) on the forum had produced, so hopefully they're OK.
Have to say I did wonder about all the ads on eBay for motor lids and whatever! Hopefully more info will come along... I'll see if I can find your thread though, thanks

It wont usually be the motor that has gone and you can test it by putting 12v to it, if the gears do not solve the issue then it is likely to be the wear on the lid/casing as covered at the end of my how to.
The solution is to have a small shim made to sleeve over the worm gear where it sits in the casing which does work as I tried it on one of mine, if the casing is worn and without the shim the new worm gear sits out of true in the slot and will not mesh with the other gear. I had hoped to get some shims made at the time but the person who was going to make them for me sold his lathe. There is some good news though, when I originally sourced the replacement gears from Turkey, there were no spares for these motors available, but now there are various choices on E Bay: New motor ( expensive ) https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Exterior-...4AAOSwA89d~H6J Replacement gears: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-75-...UAAOSwFNhgMVBi Casings: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mirror-Mo...gAAOSwE6ReVh3w New Lid: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVE...kAAOSwTuJYnIQu I have a spare motor or 2 which are not working and have just ordered a casing and a lid and will report back when I have them fitted.

Rob, thanks so much for this, and your original guide too. OK, will order a top (and maybe casing) too… or, if my courage fails me, wait till you've done it
One thing I forgot to mention… when stripping it down, I marked the outer casing top and bottom as you suggested. However, when I took the top off, the actual motor rotated quite a bit (seems to spin very freely), and I had no idea how to ensure it went back to its starting point, or if that mattered… any comment? I don’t know how it knows how to position itself when operating the mirror… Cheers Roger

It doesn't have to reposition itself as it does just spin freely in one direction then the other, the motor casing and innards incorporates a stop

Thanks - I kind of felt it must be something like that, but nice to have it confirmed

So... there seem to be 3 parts to each motor casing, is that right? Just making sure I order the right stuff... so 1 x 3 casing bits, and 1 x lid...
