Default V6 running temp?

I know a K Series should run around the low 90 degrees mark dependant on factors like engine load and outside temp etc but what should a V6 2.5 run at?

Hi Glenn.
I'd be looking for between 88 to 95, possibly higher in traffic with the low speed fan kicking on at 100c. Mine runs cool as I've not had the inspiration to fit my new one as yet. The thermostat can go either way on these cars too.

Erm... Mine tends to run about the 80c mark when driving about on motorway etc, temp does rise when stationary and fan kicks in at 100c

Your thermostat is opening too early, or stuck partially open. Has anyone been putting magic sealant gunges in the cooling system?

The same. They both have 88° thermostats and virtually identical cooling system design.

Depends what thermostat is fitted, I have a genuine MGR one as stock which is 82, but the pattern ones are 88.
The V6 I was changing the belts on today also has a 82 thermostat

Phil; you're not looking at the figure printed on the housing are you?

Yes I was, as most I have seen have 88C but this one was 82C.

It's a lie I'm afraid. My housing was also labelled 82° but I tested the 'stat and it began opening at 88°.

I don't know why this is. Maybe the earlier versions of the KV6, for the 800 series for example, may have used a cooler 'stat within.

Now you mention it, when John was reading out the temp during the refill it didn't start circulating in the expansion tank until 90

All the reading I've done on this indicates MGR specified an 88C stat for all the engines.
I think the 82C alternatives have evolved into the scene as a result of HGF in the 1.8 and overheating generally when the gauge says 'normal'. Basically lack of cooling system maintenance. Also, since the OBD routine became popular. Seeing the coolant temperature anywhere near 100C seems to frighten many owners into reducing the running temperature. Interestingly, the opposite trend as evolved with the diesel, though the feared 100C line still holds sway.
