Great thread chaps.
Not into loco's but I suppose I should be because of my Grand Fathers influence This is one reference to him on the net, there's an awful lot more out there though http://www.miniaturerailwayworld.co....eastleigh.html We were at Montrose in 2014 at the RAF station invited by the curator of the museum, my grandfather was very influential with planes during WW1 and the RFC. Need to be catching up with more research.

Being an ex BR then Transrail driver I've got a bit of an unfair advantage here! I was on the footplate from 1980 til late '90s when I moved into supervisory then management. I was trained on classes 08/09, 20, 26, 27, 37, 47, 56, 60, 86, 87 and 90. In addition to the locos I was trained on I also drove class 25, 40, 45, 46, 55 and HST pre driver training, once the drivers you were on with got to know you were sensible they were quite happy to let you drive, in fact with some it was a fight to get into the secondman's seat!
Throw into the mix a spell as a volunteer mainline steam fireman, fired Maude (God knows how many times!), several black 5s, Green Arrow, Union Of South Africa and Evening Star. |

Not
Not jealous at all........
Well......actually.. What a great working life xperience you have there Steve. Was utterly mad about the Deltics. Still go to see them in preservation from time to time. I have been on the footplate of A4 60009 U of SA a few times when steamed up but never on the move. That trully would be awesome. Chris |

I was on number 9 once, first steam loco I was on, that would be early '80s and frankly it needed some money spent on it! Took it from Eastfield back to Markinch, rattling and clanking, exhaust injector packed in. Compare that with the Evening Star, first run of the season out of the NRM, absolutely immaculate. Only blot on the day was somebody nicked the headlamps off it in Perth station while we were having our break!

The biggest and most powerful machine I've driven is a Crompton Class 33! Always good to quote power and torque dig when some old bore is boasting about the most powerful car they've driven!
