Default CDT slow start up

My car which has the cdt bmw engine has recently been taking longer for it to start up, but once started it's fine.

Is this normal for this weather or is something failing?

the weather causes more of a strain, have you had the battery replaced recently as it may be on it's way out? You can get it checked at a garage which may be free, but halfords do a free check on it

If it's slow to strart you have one of two problems either your battery is on it's way out / you've been doing short journeys (not allowing it to charge enough) or your glowplugs may want replacing.

Pre-warm the cylinders using this method:
Turn the ignition to position before start wait for glowplug light to go out and listen for a click (10-20secs in) do this 3 times then try and start see if it's any easier....

Steer clear of Halfrauds as they will try and sell you something you dont need......

Thank you, I will try the trick regarding the glow plugs the next time I use my car. If not I assume the battery is probably on its way out. I've had the car since August and not replaced the battery so for all I know it could be the original.

Our cars would start without any glow plugs, so I doubt they are the problem..

Does the car start easily with easy start? If so, I would get your injectors checked for leakage..

Reading other posts, I believe that it never gets cold enough for them to be of any use

They help with reducing emissions when starting from cold, and they may assist starting at sub zero temperatures.

I have put more fuel in this morning as it was very low and the car now starts up quick as normal. What does this indicate?

Could be one of three things;

1) Your in tank fuel pump could be starting to fail

2) The warmer engine will always start easier than a stone cold one on a diesel

or

3) The run you've had to the filling station has charged the battery slightly, thus giving it more power to turn the engine over!

Have to say that it sounds like a failing battery to me, so I would get it drop tested at an auto electricians, before investigating any further!
