A totally discharged battery can give a reading of 12 volts.--

Get that multi-meter. Not getting it might just cost you LOTS of unnecessary expenditure,.

Multimeter confirmed that alternator wasnt working and was changed today by forum member Lee T. Absolutely top bloke, cheers Lee.

Thanks also to all who replied. Great community which resulted in my car being sorted at the fraction of the price a garage would have charged Car now back on the road and running perfectly

Did you have a look at the old alternators brushes ???

If the slip rings are OK keep it as a spare or maybe to pass on to another person with charging problems.--

Go easy here. It is a bit much to ask of a person who has just got his multi tester.
No reason to scare the chap.!

Brushes and slip rings were checked, brushes down to a few mm and slip rings worn away almost completely. I'd say it was the original alternator i.m.o. I hope she behaves herself for you Ste, nice car nice spec and 1 of the best colours. Just what I want when I'm mature enough for a Rover . Lee.
