There is actually two prices on the EPC look at the service part price roughly 50% less for the same item!

Noise is always at 2000rpm regardless of what gear the autobox is in.
The noise is just as you describe, it gets worse as the car warms up and I can hear it at idle as well as when driving along- it gives the impression the car is about to fall to pieces.

Thanks all for your help - I didn't realise aftermarket CAT's were available, now I need to look into a fitting price!

Thinks.... I don't suppose I could change part of the exhaust at the same time to get a nice exhaust note?

I had a cat rattle, car passed MOT with rattle so emissions OK but rattle became annoying, got new cat £219 I think + fitting but has irritating wooo
at 2500 rpm, I think I wish I had payed a little more as the resonance at 2,500 is iritating, you dont notice if driving aggressively but when pootling at 2.500 rpm it gets on your nerves. Mind you I would not have payed £800 for one:SHOCKED: Dave

I got an aftermarket one put in for my 1.8 about 8 months ago - so far so good. Cost wast just over £100 - the oem part+fitting would have cost almost £500 ... I had no option but to go for the aftermarket!!

My last car had the cat fail. It began with a rattle and got worse, eventually it totally failed and the car lost all power and ground to a halt. The AA had to tow me home, the garage said the innereds of the cat had disintigrated and blocked the exhaust causing the car to stop. As i remember it cost me the best part of £500 to sort.

to add a subversive but fun point, I read a nice strand about getting rid of cat rattle by adding a long self tapper screw through the outer casing.

One for, along with eggs in the rad tank, getting ready for the car auction perhaps...! But worth a try before you replace it...

Yes I read that to
Problem is you really need to know what one looks like inside to know where to put the screw

I also hoping someone will get a full cat back on their 190 and keep the old system as I want to see one opened up to see if they really do have a valve on them that opens up and high rpm!

I have just contacted my MGR dealer who will ring me back with a fitted price.

I asked whether they would fit and aftermarket one and he said they would but they have never found one that fitted properly!
