I hate claiming - i really do...but my quoite went from 650 to about 1600...

Just so you know
How did you do this? Very interesting, as I had a non-fault claim and have suffered high premiums since.

I always check the comparisons but i've always found I get the best prices actually sitting down with a pen and paper then ringing around more bespoke insurers as many of the regular insurers don't take into account many aspects of the criteria which should really serve only to reduce your premium. For example; Owners Club and Enthusiast club memberships, low annual mileage and modifications.

I was with Lancaster previously but they couldn't get anywhere near Peter Best.
My ZT was my main car and I had my Launch car insured as a limited mileage on classic policy to 5000 miles. As my ZT was my main car at the time they couldn't do a classic policy on that.

If it had been my own car the Astra hit, I'd have sorted it out between myself and the third party. As it was the motability car I reported it as i'll lose my deposit when the car is renewed if it isn't in good order. What a mistake that was.

So now as the incident is now on the insurance database, I am listed as being involved in an incident where a claim was made. Irrespective of blame, I am now statistically more likely to make a claim in the future so as far as insurance goes my name is mud.

Damned if you do and damned if you dont.
It would actually be cheaper to drive around without insurance and pay the fines, get caught and end up banned and just keep driving.
So as i'm such a risk, the prices i'm getting are the insurers way of telling me to F off

When you say your car was repaired who paid for it ?

I ask because I had a similar experience and my own insurance paid for the repair until they were reimbursed by the other insurance company who were looking after the third party.

The other insurance company were dragging their feet and in the meantime my premium was due for renewal and like you it went sky high and at the time I could not afford the increase.

In the end I took to phoning both insurance companies and did their job for them and the premium went back to normal as soon as my company were reimbursed.

This may not be the case here but maybe worth a phone call to find out.

You also say that the other person admitted liability at the time but did they put that on their insurance report as it wouldn't be the first person who changes their mind when putting pen to paper, and you wont find out unless you ask.

Good luck either way, I hate insurance companies, offer you deals to suck you in, then forget about your loyalty, Churchill charged me for 2 breakdown recovery packages on mine and swmbos cars yet forget to tell me I only needed one as we were both covered in either car by just one of the packages. They refused a refund so the dog food is no longer paid for by me - Oh Yessss !

I'll add my tuppence worth:

I phoned up my insurer to transfer my active policy to my new ZT. Firstly, they declined to insure me on the ZT despite having four years no-claims with them, and never having had so much as a blip.

Then, they "generously" offered to insure me, for the princely sum of £112 a month - Over £60 more than I was paying to for my other 75 with them.

I hit the internet, and not only found a cheaper quote for the ZT, but also found a monthly premium that was LESS than my current 75; ending up paying only £38 a month.

It's absolutely ridiculous. Sufficed to say I took the online offer and cancelled all policies with them.

The third party admitted liability on her report, I had confirmation of this from her insurer and when RSA contacted me they also told me I wouldn't have anything to pay as the third partys insurance was paying for everything.

The worst thing is that neither me or the third party were in our vehicles at the time. Lol

All i've had since are personal injury companies pestering me to put a claim in, probably getting 2-4 phonecalls a day since the incident occurred.
Vultures, absolute vultures. The entire industry is designed to do nothing but take as much as they can from you.

I felt for the third party, heavily pregnant lady who was shaking terribly with the shock of what had happened. She was terrified of telling her husband what had happened and my other half had to calm her down and reassure her everything was ok and no one was hurt.

I just feel really deflated that through no fault of my own i've been rogered good and proper by a big corporate...

I think its just some insurers that are either money grabbers, or cowards.

Swiftcover did it to me last year. I had a bump, someone hit the car behind me (another ZT!) which was pushed into me bending my bumper causing some paint to flake off. I had it repaired, all fine, all blame admitted by the non ZT driver (his car and the other ZT were written off).

Come renewal Swiftcover doubled my premium, saying I was a bigger risk now and would not budge. So I changed and got a lower quote than the previous year! Even with all my modifications admitted to this years quote was still 40% less than the swiftcover quote.

It seems like the old 'computer says no' thing. Common sense would tell you that you are not a bigger risk, but the computer sees £££ because it was programmed by an idiot.

This is fairly typical of Insurance companies these days, much like large companies, governments, etc; it is the world we live in. For example, if you have protected 'no-claims', you don't lose your discount, but you will find the premium goes up. Even 'no-fault' claims are considered as making you more likely to make a claim in the future.

On the other side we have the public admitting liability at the scene, but denying fault later on. Others make spurious claims for whiplash etc. Also, beware of accepting a courtesy car from a 'claims management' company, even if the other parties insurance is going to pay. The charges are phenomenally high, often higher than repair cost, and if the other insurance company refuses to pay, your insurance company will have to pay, and this will affect your premium.

I think 'Honest John' from the 'Telegraph Motoring' has a website that gives you all the questions and answers you need when dealing with insurance claims.

It's ridiculous. This all means i'm probably now gonna have to sell the ZT as the insurance companies have basically conspired with nothing but statistics and priced me out of ownership. How is that sensible for an industry to survive?
I can't justify insurance at that price. Pee'd off, the ZT isn't just a car, it's part of our family and I never imagined having to sell it.

I have had an experience from the other side as it were. I was pulling out of a petrol station on the Garstang Road one Sunday afternoon, I thought I was sticking too far out into the traffic so, having checked my mirrors I reversed slowly to await a gap. The woman in the Nissan Quashquai (or whatever the damn thing was called) had pulled her car diagonally across the rear of my car, with her driver's door at a 45 degree angle to my nearside bumper and what must have been about an inch away from it.
My bumper scraped the lower portion of her door (I was going very slowly!) so she reversed, I reversed and we had a look at the 'damage'. A scuff on her door, a scuff on my bumper, no dents or dings, a bit of paint transfer. Scratches.
I did everything wrong. I admitted it was my fault and I didn't take any pictures of her door.
I suggested she take the car to my bodyshop guy (he does a lot of insurance work) I told my bodyshop guy about the damage. He said it was a common repair and would cost about £100. She didn't. She took it to a 'registered' Nissan repair shop in Lytham. Their 'experts' (stopping myself from swearing here) said I had damaged the side impact beam in the door. I know where the side impact beam is in those cars. About 6 inches above where I scraped the door skin!
They claimed it needed a new door (b******t) and the old bitch went on to claim a hire car for 21 days following their car being left for repair!
In the end the hit on my insurance company was around £2700. I asked what the effect would be on my renewal and I was told it would be about 10% on top of last year. Last year was about £530 fully comp so I thought it would be ok. The renewal came in at nearly £900! I went on the comparison sites and ended up with £565 on Compare the Meerkat with protected no claims, everything declared and no limit on my mileage. Adrian Flux said they couldn't get near that so I said a sad goodbye to them. But before I did that I sent a detailed letter to my insurers saying that from what my wife and I witnessed the damage was nowhere near as bad as the claimants said it was. I will definitely be shopping around for my next renewal!
