I would imagine there's plenty of 5 year old ones for sale now. Price is probably comparable to a similar petrol/diesel.

Until there is the perfect infrastructure for charging electric vehicles it will not be viable.
I cannot even get public transport to get me to work in time for my shift, electric is fine for large cities but not good for rural areas.

They've already got rid of the subsidies on Cat 2 and Cat 3 electric vehicles.
It'll be Cat 1 next when the manufacturers are only doing electric

It will take a good 30 years+ to see the end of ICE, the infrastructure isn't there for EV and it won't be in place any time soon, how the hell will people in terraced streets or flats charge their car? Run a cable across the street? Install charging points along every stretch of residential road? I can barely fit my car down the street as it is, can't wait to start fighting with neighbours over charging points.

I still think hydrogen cell is the way forward

And in terraced streets with no gardens, drives or garages there will be hundreds of orange extension leads laying across the pavements into peoples cars!!
Health and safety etc
Imagine the bun fight to park near your house, just to hang a cable out your living room window to charge your motor. You'd have to park with the length of your lead. Total madness.

Not to mention the elderly cables underground 60 + years old which were never designed to carry the current for a street full of 30 amp (7 kilowatt) car chargers!!! Huge infrastructure investment required, who's going to pay for that?

Don't mention the VAT on electricity is currently 5%, compare that to 60% or more tax on petrol & diesel, won't be long before that changes....

Still might be plenty of work for us electricians installing outside sockets and charging points though.

sorry p-nut, typing at the same time as you.

In 2040 I will be 70.

Will I still be driving ? Probably.

But I will NEVER have an electric or hybrid car.

End of story LOL

It'll be/is a POLITICAL decision, nothing to do with science, common sense, viability, feasibility of infrastructure etc.etc. And obviously nothing to do with vested interests pulling a few strings and the odd brown envelope........

In similar vein DEFRA are hell bent on completely banning coal asap. It's apparently more environmentally friendly to grow trees in Canada, chop them down, transport them to the coast, load them onto very big ships, move them across several hundreds of miles of ocean, unload them, transport them to distribution centres and finally to the consumer than digging up and using locally sourced coal. Really?

And what are rural communities that use coal supposed to do? Many have no piped gas so that's out. Rip out all the perfectly working coal fired boliers etc. and install wood pellets (see above). Or oil? Or LPG. Or erm.... electric heating????? That's not expensive/wasteful/environmentally damaging is it?

Maybe if cars were no longer treated as a disposable item after a very few, short years, and a proper cradle to grave impact analysis was undertaken rather than a final user headline figure it might help more sensible future planning and decision making.

Rant over.

Andy.

. In order to have a home charging point fitted you will need to have access to off-road parking such as a private driveway or garage
.
Well that's probably over half the population unable to own an electric vehicle then.

Why do I have this vision of hundreds of extension cables hanging out of tower block windows.
Will the theft of fuel be replaced by the theft of electricity?

And what about freight and farming? Long distance lorry driving would suddenly become short distance lorry driving.. Will farming go back to horse drawn vehicles?

Electric powered vehicles may work in some cities but never in a rural location.
Cheers Ian
