Any suggestions from here?
As already mentioned, the failure of the master switch to light up won't be anything to do with the pedal switches.

Are you sure your ABS system is working correctly? If the NSF wheel sensor isn't reading then the cruise master switch will not engage cruise.

Aha, new development.
Brake warning light has just appeared.
Pads seem fine (not worn excessively).
Could this be a cause of the problem?
Re: what was said about an ABS failure (NSF).

Nope the brake warning light is independent of the cruise control.

When you switch the ignition on does the ABS lamp light up and go out, as it should? And if so is it working independently of the other dash lights?

Not unknown for the ABS warning LED to be either taped over or piggy backed to another lamp to mask an ABS fault.

You have checked fuse 4 in the engine fuse box?

Turning on ignition, the ABS warning light comes on, then goes off.
Fuse 4 in the engine fuse box is working fine.

One thing I maybe should have mentioned...
The car has the highline ice system (factory fitted).
The units in the boot were wrapped in polythene bags and sealed with some sort of goo. CD changer on glovebox was missing.
I removed all the highline units and fitted one of Sean's Chinese boxes (a Win CE double din 7 inch screen affair from quite a few years ago).
Unit went in like a dream, BMW harness converter doo-dah swiped from another ZT and the box fired up first time, everything working.
I forgot to connect the steering controls, so went back in and connected the appropriate connector to the red plug attached to the radio wiring.
That's when a shed-load of K-bus type trauma started - no indicator lights in the ipk, but they work fine outside the car (no click either). Same went for the hazard warnings. Central locking stopped working.

Since everything was working fine before I connected up the steering controls, the obvious culprit was that connection.
I removed the steering control plug and everything returned to normal.

The horn works.
I don't think there's a problem with the steering controls. Maybe a highline needs some extra consideration when connecting the double din I've got.

It's probably a separate issue to the cruise, I thought I better mention it in case it actually is relevant.
