I bet he didn't!
It isn't the hole the bolt goes through but the clamp itself where the play will be. The specified torque for the bolt can be insufficient to tightly clamp the lower arm ballpoint. If this happens then the clamp will wear over time and a new hub is required. If you catch it early enough before any damage occurs then tightening the bolt further can cure it. |

Well, I drove it to Mr Rover at 10mph (well... maybe a little more) with my hazards flashing, in case the hub popped out. He only had time for a quick look tonight, but said it had destroyed the ball joint, for a start. I'll know more tomorrow possibly. In the meantime, his courtesy car is now an MG6 diesel - horrible interior trim, but I found it very pleasant and Rover-like to drive.

When I went to undo this bolt on my car it sheared. On inspection it had been stretched through being grossly over-tightened in the past, so be careful how much over the specified torque you go. |

Yes a very good point. Personally I use a new nut and bolt and go to a maximum of 60Nm if required.
This isn't a recommendation, just what I do. Each to their own. |

Well, all done. The hub was pretty gruesome "worst I've ever seen" (quote) - big oval hole where the pinch bolt goes, and the ball joint almost free to come and go as it pleased. Good thing I drove there very slowly
I'd better keep this car for 500,000 miles or so now, with all the money I've spent on it recently - fortunately that's what I planned to do anyway
