Any DOT4 fluid will suffice, however I rather think if not a leak somewhere, your brake pads will be fairly worn, as when the pads wear the fluid level drops in the reservoir, which when new pads are fitted will restore the level

Brand is not important, specification is. Look for DOT4

DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 are both Polyethylene-Glycol based and either can safely be used.

Do not use DOT 5 as that is Silicone based and is not compatible with DOT 4 or DOT 5.1

If dot4 and dot5.1 are the same? Why have they got different numbers? Surely the spec is different?

The specification is different, DOT 5.1 has a higher boiling point than DOT 4, but they are both based on the same compound - Polyethylene-Glycol.
