Default Manual Diesel Tourer £200 - Doncaster area

Nothing to do with me, but thought someone might get a fixer-upper.

Nothing too expensive to fix, could be a bargain!

Incredible that another 75 (and a diesel estate at that... ) is at scrap money, all for the sake of some piping and brake repair.

Firstly, do the repairs yourself.
25 feet of Kunifer brake pipe, approx £10. Flaring tool, £35.
Discs & pads all round, maybe £200 (guessing).

A large, well built, family estate with a BMW diesel engine for under £500.

These things are the bargain of the century...

It'll end up in a scrap yard unfortunately as people don't work on cars these days. Labour rates in garages are the death nail of cheap cars as people only see a monetary value it can bring if sold, and not the value of a serviceable car.

Mantra these days is, if it goes wrong, chop it in and get another one. From an ecology perspective I'd like to see the same mentality that say that Indian or Cuba adopt regarding car, repair, repair, repair and not just dispose.

We need community garages throughout the country that are run on a not-for-profit basis where people can go with their cars and get help from others, perhaps then more car will still be on the road and not made into tin cans. Think of them as an extension to the various car forums, a meeting place where cars can be repaired.

When I was growing up, people were out tinkering with their cars in the street, which not only kept cars on the road, it fostered a community spirit as others would come and lend a hand. Now weekends are taken up going around those blooming large supermarkets buying more cheap disposable item that are thrown away after 6 months.

Personally I'd slap a £5000 disposal fee on a used car, then people will start to value what they have and realise fixing it is much better for the planet. Fix it for £200, or pay £5000 to get rid of it as an end of life sale. The disposal fee only being waved after a full assessment (end of life MOT perhaps) of the car's viability of remaining on the road. ie so full of rust etc it is justified in being crushed.
