Hello Mike; this is good to hear!

Also any indication of the whereabouts of this temperature sensor?
According to MG Rover it's mounted on the valve block, but I'm sure that Rob will be able to guide you more effectively. It's resistance can be measured via the round 18 pin connector near the battery. I have a table of resistances vs. temperature.

But looking at the manual a second ATF fluid sensor is mentioned; mounted on the cooler. I didn't know about that. Has anyone else heard of it?

Of course an alternative is a gearbox swop, how difficult is that, too?
Some other forum members have mentioned this. One went ahead and, not surprisingly, the "good" second-hand transmission which he bought was also faulty, so he ended up with double the trouble. The other fact to bear in mind is that the KV6 2.5 litre version has gear ratios which are not shared with any other 75/ZT engine type. So I would recommend that repairing what you have is preferable to a risky replacement!

There's an excellent JF506E repair manual available from Sussex Auto Parts. It has a wealth of diagrams which show exactly where all the components are, including the clutches you asked about. It's primarily written for Mazda vehicles, but this mainly affects the electrical equipment outside the gearbox.

Good luck Mike, I'm sure that you'll find the problem.

Simon

Isn't the temp sensor on the oil cooler for operating the oil cooler fan and the temp sensor in the gearbox for selecting a favourable change pattern to aid cooling in extreme operating conditions ?

Doh! Of course it is, thanks Chris, and fitted to the K1.8 Turbo only.
