Default Digital or 35m.m.?....looking for advice..

Now I know I'm an old diehard when it comes to photography...Nikon FM2n + Prime Lenses, so without wanting to start a film/digital war! I am after some advice. It is getting more difficult to get my beloved pictures developed( I still take Velvia Slides as well as Prints)SO:
To get the same resolution as say 100asa film what sort of DigitalSLR am I looking at? I still like Nikon, though Canon must run close.I am not a complete dinosaur in that I do take digital with my trusty( albeit not the same build quality/robustness as the FM2) Olympus C5060.The one thing that bugs me is the slow shutter response of the digital and on the Nikon I am in total control.I cannot knock the quality of the binary pictures on here but surely to get photos of the same quality as my steam camera is going to cost? Thanks in advance.P.

Stick with Nikon, but go Digital now.
Dependant on Budget and what you want to do with it Picture wise, there is some new Excellent models out there,
I'd go for something like the D80 for starters, which can be had at a good price (around £400 body only)
or D2HS (around £1950 body only) which I treated myself to,excellent camera on power with my 6x6 and 35mm.
or if lots of money available the D2XS for around the £2200 mark again Body only.
These will match the best 35mm cameras, but with all the modern advances etc.

Digital SLRs can be really fast. I for myself prefer the Canon EOS 400D. I think it's good value for money and a good camera for action shooting. (For example last weekend I took 2,000 pics during an American football afternoon ... )

If going digital, a good reason to buy an SLR is the size of the chip. Sadly in "ordinary" digital cameras the chips are shrinking and shrinking, but the mega pixels are growing inflationary. A real bad recipe for the quality of the pictures.

Hi Pete,
I use a Lumix FZ7 which is a little old hat now, but I also use a Nikon Coolpix P5100, this, of course, is not a DSLR but it does have 12.1 megapixel resolution. if you want to pop over and shoot a few photos with it to get a idea of what that resolution is like feel free.

regards
