Default 180 V6 ZT Overheating

A friend of mine not on the forum has a 180 Auto ZT that is currently overheating.

Will run fine for a while and then needle will shoot up to red, come down, shoot up, hover a bit and go down.. up again and so on.

Coolant is bursting out of the cap.

It's recently had the thermostat done, coolant temp sensor and related pipework all spot on. New expansion tank cap also fitted.

Doubtful of an airlock.. anything else to look for? Quite worrying and renders his car unusable.

Cheers
Robson

Nice to meet you too my friend.

I'll get that checked out. Wasn't aware oil cooler failure would cause this issue! Mad!

How about cooling fan. Have you checked it functions under test?

Start engine, press demist button, get out of the car and check that the fan is spinning. If not it'll either need a new gold resistor or, if a 3 speed fan is fitted, it'll maybe need the brushes replacing.

Forgot to mention all 3 speeds have been reported as functioning. Has resistor mod too.

Overheats at speed too.

Why is that? It's a real possibility if the cooling system wasn't filled and bled properly after the recent work. Here's the procedure. Your friend would be foolish not to.

This evidence tells me that someone doesn't know what they're talking about. A 3 speed system should not have a resistor fitted. If there is a resistor present then it's a 2 speed system.

Ask your friend whether anyone (including the garage) has added K-seal at any time.

Simon

Hi simon,

My apologies I thought V6's had 3 speed fan.

The thermostat was done by someone quite well known on these forums so I'm not going to name him, pretty sure he would have bled the system right as he's highly recommended on here.

And to our knowledge no K seal has ever been added to the system.

Cheers
Robson
