Default Gear change cables.

Rover 75, LHD, manual, diesel, CDTi, 2000 coniseur, saloon. 90,000miles

I've just had the clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder and a full clutch replacement to my car. Upon driving away I had slight problem with downshifting to 2nd gear. After a couple of days I lost all gears. Selector problem. I had to be recovered home.

A local garage diagnosed the cables as the problem. I checked with Rimmer bros, they don't stock the item for my car. Apparently I have to replace the whole unit from the gear stick onwards. It was only after 2004 that the cables where available as separates.
I was advised to replace the whole assembly from/for a later model.
Has anyone done that mod? Is it possible?
Does anyone have a new or nearly new 2000 gear cable assembly?
I'm in Spain so finding parts is very difficult here.
Any suggestions are welcomed.
Many thanks

Be aware, the cable set for the later 75 is different to the early version so to save wasting time and money, get the cables from an earlier model as this is all that will really work properly.

No promises but will try to get yarding this week and see if i can get a cable set and let you know. But there are a few on here who should be able to help. Holland 314 or mickyboy. They break whole vehicles down and they may be quicker to rescue your problem than me.

Which cables is Stan talking about on his manual gearbox car with a hydraulic clutch?

Simon

Edit: Ahh, I've seen the light now; a cable operated gearchange. Wow, I am surprised. The Austin Maxi was always criticised for that system. I had no idea it was still in use.

Try checking this

when doing a clutch change I think the cables have to be removed at the gearbox end.

The outer cable is retained in a bracket with a fragile metal spring clip.

Make sure these have not snapped or come adift and the outer cable is moving freely

https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-ULS100140 At the top of the picture is a black plastic adjuster, to the right a "brass" fitting. On this fitting you can see the wing of the metal spring clip.

I don't know if you can get the clip separately, I have a feeling you cant and so a trip to the scrap yard will be in order or the use of a cable tie

I've had the cables rechecked and manipulated. The problem I'm told by the garage was in the selector mechanism box under the gear lever. I'm fairly sure that the Garage that replaced the clutch didn't remove the cables as advised before dropping the gearbox.

However, things seem to be going ok. I used the earlier cables from a diesel manual car. The company that supplied them was extremely helpful. They are local to family and I do recommend them.
