Default Rover 75 diesel knock at front offside

Yes I know what you're going to say, failed ball joint or rear bush on front suspension. The problem is I replaced all the front suspension and assuming the knock was my fault, from incorrect fitting, had my local independent garage put the car on a ramp and check it. They couldn't find any movement.

I have also replaced the lower engine mount and that seems Ok. So I baffled by the knocking sound I am getting from the front offside when I setting off. Has anyone got any suggestions as to what it could be?

Possibly drive shaft outer joint, drive shaft inner joint, caliper, caliper mount, pads, diff, loose wheel, that should give you a few things to check, after all that I'm scratching my head

This may not be very helpful, but I had the same thing on mine, and everything replaced. Turned out to be part of the actual hub - I can't remember how it all fits together, but there's a kind of clamp joint on it somewhere, where a bolt goes through and tightens it on something.

The surfaces inside the joint had worn oval, so it rattled - apparently it could be hard to detect unless you know what you're looking for, but my guy fitted a good used hub, and... silence

A while after that, it started on the other side - this time the hub was OK, but the bolt was worn and reduced in diameter,so a new bolt fixed it.

Might be worth checking

Did you replace the suspension leg top mounts/bearings ?

Ditto ... Hoogweed. That eventually was the cause of mine. After renewal of all other front suspension related parts , this indeed was the culprit. Even jacked up with the car up high there was no movement up or down that could be seen, and the hub clamps were nice and tight . Once the car was off the floor the coil springs kept the hub firmly planted at the base of the clamp , and avoids detection. I even renewed wheel bearings to sort it but eventually after changing the hub .. bingo.

Had a couple of those over the years - with the wheel jacked up and secured you should be able to feel play by moving the wheel in and out, and then look from underneath to check whether the play is in the hub clamp or ball joint itself.
