Good luck

Thanks Jules, thought about that too, but then turning on the Synergy wouldn't worsen the amount of smoke it would be the same no matter if switched on or off.

The PCV on the car originally was reasonably clean, but as Darren had already bought one of the new BMW filterless types we fitted that.

The amount of oil in the bottom of the intercooler wasn't excessive, in line with what you would normally expect to find. Also the smoke is jet black and smells slightly of partially unburnt fuel, no hint of the blue hue you'd normally expect from oil.

Certainly worth considering the turbo though should the injector service not improve things.

Managed to make it back home .... where did all that snow come from !!
Thanks again to Russ for his help and support ... as always it is appreciated.

I am beginning to lose patience with the MG at present, I have now changed most of the common items (PVC, ERG, Intercooler seals) and although general performance is alot better, I am no closer to resolving the smoking issues.

I now have a choice to make. Do I remove the synergy, sell it and live with the limited smoking (not excessive), or start to spend serious money to have the injectors serviced and then if not fixed look at the turbo !!!

Does anyone have any injector specialist garages in Barnsley/S Yorks?

I have also emailed Ron, I would be interested in his thoughts on what could be causing the issues, it may help if we know what the synergy does, the smoking is linked to the synergy being turned on and gets worse the higher the power setting.

For ref T4 figures

cylinder balancing is:
Cylinder 1: -1.2 (-1.3)
Cylinder 2: +1.1 (+2.4)
Cylinder 3: -0.6 (-1.7)
Cylinder 4 +0.4 (0.2)
(figures pre xmas prior to injector cleaner)

MAF 2.1v at idle
Mass air flow
Idle: 485-490mg/stroke
3000 revs 676-685mg/stroke

Any advise would be appreciated.

A pleasure Darren

I've thawed out a bit now, hope the traffic wasn't too bad.

Wondered given that the injector cleaner worked in reducing the inbalance by half it may be worth considering another dose?

I think one of the pluses in the new balance figures should be a minus on either 3 or 4 ?

Is there any way of measuring the amount of boost pressure (other than plumbing in a guage)? If you were loosing boost somewhere other than the seals I would have thought it would make the car smoke more than usual.

I don't think leaking Turbo seals would show any reduced boost than normal.
They only leak a tiny amount pressure/volume wise, but this is enough to produce plumes of smoke from just a few drops of oil per minute.

They only sure way of testing a turbo is by substitution.

A recent local owner here had a Garage "test" his turbo and gave it all clear.
Having replaced everything else mentioned above that would cause smoke, we decided to bite the bullet and replace turbo.

Now smoke free but he's £600 lighter in the pocket!

... Jules, he said..

>>>I don't think leaking Turbo seals would show any reduced boost than normal.<<<

In my own case, when Jules took my car to bits we found that the "O" rings were doing zilch! but having replaced them there was NO noticeable difference in the cars performance, and in my case, the turbo is less than a year old..

So I have to agree with Jules on this point.

I thought perhaps there might be boost leak elsewhere on the intercooler pipes that is all, its not unheard of but sometimes hard to detect if not obvious?

It's just to me black smoke means 1 of 2 things, too much fuel or lack of air.

EDIT: When I replaced my intercooler seals which were badly swolen I can't say I noticed a difference in performance either.

I'd be thinking along the lines of possible further leaks or other problems if it wasn't the fact that simply turning the Synergy on causes 3 times the amount of smoke even on a low setting.

Before "biting the bullet" I'd be inclined to go with Big Russ's suggestion.... give it a mega-dose of injector cleaner! A tip I gleaned from a friend many years ago (who was an AR service agent)...... "before you go spending money on parts or diagnostics, give it an overdose of injector cleaner!" This has worked for me on two previous occasions. At least twice the recommended dose..... not a guarantee, but a very cheap first option! I wish you good luck!

Btw.... if you're wondering what "overdose" means, I'd say a whole bottle of RedEx to half a tank of diesel!

Just thought of another place for turbo pressure leak I had 2 years ago:

Just behind the outside temp sensor, the wire had worn a hole in the intercooler itself. (size of a pea)
But this was a pretty obvious leak & hissing could be heard.
