Default Engine temp test.

Ok iv been messing.

I thought id see what my temp was doing as th cold weather was with us again....!

Put new stat in top hose 4 years ago. Approx 20,000 miles covered since.

Took car on leisurely 10 mile drive. Eventually got up to 9 oclock. Thought it took a while to warm up. So i though id look at it on th OBD to see what it was doing. When i started it after a shopping stop it was 62c. Took it on th flat mainly to my test hill. Reading between 80 and 84c. Then sent it up th climb. It gains just over 550 foot in a mile. Some of it 1 in 4. Max temp reached (very briefly) 94c. Then pulled over on a ridge and left it to tick over facing a minus 1.5 brisk easterly wind 82c. Drove back th less hilly route. Its a slow gradient down hill with no throttle or very little. It hovered around 74c.

Do you think thats ok.

I guess it depends on what you mean by warmer. These in-line stats vary in their performance with the diesel according to setting and brand and engines vary a little too.

What sort of temps are you seeing?

I fitted a temp gauge to mine a few months ago. Mine is pretty much exactly the same temps as yours. It must have worked hard up that hill, the highest figure I have seen is 86

That's very good. You must have everything optimised, especially the in-line stat setup. Obviously a 100% watertight (closed) selection. In-line stats with the smallest hint of bleed-through (closed) have a dramatic effect on running temperature (lower).

What brand of stat is it?

Today's none scientific findings. It was warmer with a outside temp of 5.5c. I went shopping, so city traffic there and back and mainly flat roads.. Cabin heater on full and engine temp struggled around 80c. On return trip with cabin heater on 20c (sun was shining in and toasty in car) it went upto 89c and then back to 85c. Yo yoing like that all th way back. Heater matrix must rob quite a few BTU's then..
