Wash your mouth out
Well, after Gary had filled the cooling system & pressurized it, he found no coolant left after 20 mins no visible leaks, so he drained the oil to find water mixed in Rocker box removed & no.1 cylinder head bolt removed, bottom left as you look, shone a torch down & he could see water dripping down into the sump. Refitted bolt & retightened, put coolant back in & pressured again, this time it held pressure, looking good, but, something not right After looking at a spare head & block, he noticed if you look into one of the holes you can see the bolt hole, so he looked at mine & water was just dripping continuously down it.
So, the gasket had breached between the water jacket & bolt hole, as fast as you filled it, it poured down the bolt Not as bad as first thought, no water in the cylinders, liners fine etc, ran fine, just lost coolant.
Tomorrow, new gasket fitting thanks to Brian who let me have his Payen set.
Fingers crossed, back on the road

Ronnie

Pleased that it is not as bad as you first thought, and would have been a great shame if you had to get rid of it, after all you have done, one of the best 1.8's around

See you soon

Stu

Classic symptoms of the elastomer losing its bond on the gasket body and shimmying out due over the years of use. Be good for another 80k miles most likely. Consider it a service item that cost a little more this time, perhaps cheaper than a service on another flashier make of car.

Hopefully you'll be back on the road quickly and without too much expense. Great news.

That's good to hear Ronnie, should be a straightforward fix.
