Default Nice Dilemma to Have

3 of my cars use 096 batteries. Last week the one fitted to the Streetwise failed. Luckily for me a mate got a new one and brought it to work enabling me to get home that evening.
I got thinking and remembered that the battery was originally fitted to my wife's 75 when we got it in 2016 and the original receipt is in the car folder.
There was still 6 months left on the warranty!
Yesterday Halfords handed me a brand new 096 battery worth £102. Do I,
1. Fit it to one of my 2 cars that have the same battery even though there is nothing wrong with either of them.
2. Keep it for future use just in case.
3. Sell it
4. Swap it for a 065 battery which I need for a 1997 Polo that I'm restoring.
It's only a battery but it seems a shame to waste it!

Hi Vic.
Nice to see Halfords sticking to their warranty, I too had a bit of luck at the weekend with Halfords.

On Thursday 14th I had gone out in the FL2 not far from home about 3.5 miles I could hear a whining coming from the engine , pulled into the retails car park as I was visiting Home bargains, lifted the bonnet as saw right away the power steering fluid was at the minimum, even though it had been check four days previous.

Light bulb moment yes Halfords was just 150 yards down the road so walked to them, asked at the desk do you have power steering fluid for a Landrover freelander 2 yes was the reply, great can I get a litre please, once again I asked are you sure this is ok and compatible with the FL2 then another employer said yer mate I have an FL2 is what I use.

So purchased walked back to car topped up and went about my shopping, drove home the 3.5/4 miles pulling onto my drive same whining noise, checked again low fluid, so now I know I must have a leak somewhere, but could also see that the power steering fluid was getting frothy.

Checked in my owners manual and low and behold I was given the wrong PAS fluid PSF when in fact it should have been CHF 202.

Anyways found the leak going into the steering pinion corroded pipe, rang Landrover asked about the part £55 but it cone in tow parts so need the other parts as well another £62, told them about the frothing, was informed I now need to flush the system it takes about 3 litres of CHF202 green fluid at £11.50 a litre.

On Saturday I took back the wrong PSF fluid told the manger about the frothing and I now need to flush the system he said sorry, gave me full refund on the PSF and three free bottle of CHF202 to flush and top up the FL2 once I have fitted the new parts I am waiting on from Maltings.

So yes big shout out for Halfords for a no quibble refund and bonus fluid, all I can say is the chap whom works there must have changed his fluid for PSF or he did not know what he was talking about.

PS take the battery back and try for a refund if not change it for the battery you need you can't lose.

Good end result Steve but the right advice to start with is what you needed, amazes me how people can feel so sure about themselves whilst they talk out of their backsides

I had one of ECP cheap Lion batteries for my TF, went flat within 2 weeks. Returned the battery for a replacement, this went flat within 3 weeks. Checked car for battery drain and all seems ok. ECP exchanged the Lion battery for a Bosch S4 O75 battery at no extra charge, so far so good.

I hope you are correct Andy, I was starting to question the TF's electrics.

HI Rob.
Yes maybe some of my fault I should have double checked even though they gave me the free 3 litres I have still purchased the original Landrover fluid, so the Halfords will only be used for flushing.

what'app on its way to you now.

My dashcam gave up after a couple of months. Went back to Halfords and they replaced it no quibble. In fact, the lady at the counter handed me another new one, she had got a little muddled. I pointed out what she had done.
It's not in my nature to snaffle things.
They were good to me, I'm good to them.
I have my principles. Old school.
