Default Rover 75 V6 Petrol Auto - Thermostat Problems

Hello

At the end of summer I replaced the 3 timing belts and water pump and whilst I was at it I noticed there was antifreeze in between the V on top of the engine so I replaced the thermostat and pipes with a genuine Rover Thermostat kit. The old one broke into several pieces as I removed it so it was long overdue for replacement.

Nice of Rover to use only one bolt on the thermostat and situate it in such an awkward place to get to.

I don't use the car for many miles and after a few weeks the tell tale smell of antifreeze led me to look and see antifreeze once again in the V.

I stripped the air intakes off again and checked all the pipes and removed the thermostat and applied some sealant around the base of the thermostat before refitting it. New gaskets where used on the air intakes.

After only a few weeks there's antifreeze in the V again ... I'm going to push kitchen cloth down and dry it out and then run the engine to see if I can spot where it's leaking from.

Is there anything I'm missing (the wife thinks I've got something missing but that's another story) ... is there a step by step guide as to what to do regarding removing and replacing the thermostat please?

I'm going to source and order a new kit and new gaskets and want to fit it 'correctly' this time.

Any help, tips, etc would be gratefully appreciated.

Neill

The usual cause I see these days is pitting / dirt in the connecting port to the engine block - if there's pitting it'll erode the new O Ring in short order, and if there's remnants of old O Ring left they'll preclude a good seal forming.

Good point. I did ensure all pipes/ports and thermostat housing etc were clean and used my Dremel with a little polish on it it to clean around the ports (rag stuffed in before to ensure no contamination went into the engine block.

When I strip it all down again I'll have another clean and ensure there's no pitting.

Many thanks

No problem - failing that, sometimes the O Rings just don't seem to sit right.
We have some revised O Rings here made from Viton, if the kit is one of ours drop me a message and I'll send some over

As far as I am aware, the thermostat on my V6 (2001 Connie Tourer) with 145,000 on the clock is original. I am having no problems with Thermostat at present, but given Neill's comments above, I wondering if come next Spring I should should do a preemptive change, before it fails? OR is it a case of "if aint broke don't fix it.........."

Hi Öruba,

It's the 'O' ring at the base of the thermostat housing which is leaking.
Full details are here.
