Default One for the IT Techies

Had an issue with our Virgin Media broadband earlier today. Wi-fi went down completely, but wired connections (through the same router) worked fine. Did the usual switch on & off with no improvement, so suspected an issue with the router, however Virgin's status page showed a network fault in our area. Interestingly all over Facebook, folk 'round here were saying no Wi-fi".

Just had a text from Virgin to say "all fixed", and sure enough, Wi-fi is now all good .

So, what kind of network issue could take out wi-fi without affecting wired connections?

Cliff

I had this for months on end with Virgin media , It got to the point where the wi-fi was constantly dropping out or it was rubbish speed that I'd had a belly full. I've laid ethernet cable & hard wired all the PC's in the house, no more problems.

Then they had the cheek to put the price up on the 1st September, my missus gave them hell over the phone & they dropped the price rise.

This was really odd though. The wi-fi signal from device to router was fine, but it wouldn't connect to the internet. Wired had no issues

I would have thought that provided the router could access the Web (which it evidently could), then any wi-fi issues would be down to the internal network, but it seems not. As soon as Virgin declared the network issue sorted, wi-fi was once again accessing the Web as usual. All very strange.

My connection is adsl and not fibre and a few times in the past the phone line has gone dead but the internet worked fine. Always as I recall after Openreach had been in a junction box in a nearby street and dislodged one of our cables. There are two cables and the internet apparently can work on only one of them depending on which one but the phone requires both cables to be serviceable.
