I encountered the stripped spline locking nut problem today. After 5 abortive minutes trying to get a 21mm socket onto the lock nut I tried a very slightly larger 13/16 AF (12 point)socket. It went on after a couple of hits and fitted securely. Just as well as a lot of effort was required to budge the lock nut.
