I'm struggling to understand to which part of the engine you're referring Steve. Are you talking about the exhaust manifold side of the LH bank which is at the front of the engine compartment? Errr ... how do you know that Steve? Simon

oil cooler is ok as I have been under the car taken the undertray off and looked.
also yesterday the car was on a ramp and two rover service blokes and me was under the car. the only damp/wet area is around what would be the under the steering fluid container. because the fluid from the steering fluid is red I put two and two together and thought it was coolant. it would seem I was wrong . its steering fluid . only a few drops of water in the top of the oil filler cap. no mayo . but when he put his finger in to the oil filler he dragged out some gung. so they think its the head gasket . thanks |

Have you been using the car regularly Steve? What you've described sounds like condensation. Simon

totally agree with you.
not often a v6 head gasket goes. oil cooler on mine is just the pipe style on the front of the car under the rad. looks in good order with no sign of problems. thanks |

Totally agree with you.
Not often a v6 head gasket goes. And I dont agree with what has been said by the garage. My reason for that is a couple of weeks ago I did a service. all the plugs was in good order . And since I did the service is never run better. To the point of increase in mpg from 22.0 up to as much as 27. mpg . average been 26.mpg. At the time I had a good look around and no water or drips was seen. The coolant loss does not even show up on the floor. Its never overheated in my time of having the car. also I have a led temp readout. oil cooler on mine is just the pipe style on the front of the car under the rad. looks in good order with no sign of problems. As for use to be honest its not used as much as it should be. only does around 100 miles a week. and to be fair its all short trips of around 10 miles. so I do agree that its more likely to be condensation. thanks |

Hi Steve.
When were the coolant cap O-rings last looked at and or changed, is there any pink residue on top of the tank, do you only have the coolant level with the maximum mark in side the tank, also if the O-rings a fine is the cap screwed down tight.

hi Arctic,
Must put my hand up and admit I dont know how old the cap is . But not seen any coolant around the filler. Dont even get a patch on the floor or drips. Had it up on a ramp yesterday with two rover trained mechanics with the engine running up to the point of the fan kicking in. Not one of us could see a drip or a run of coolant. Think maybe the next step is a gas tester to see if any gas is in the coolant. Im off work next week so it will be up on the ramps again to have another look. The old girl does around 100 miles a week so its just a case of topping her up every couple of days. Need to get it sorted for next year as we missed out on all the meets this year. This is not a new problem been going on a while now. Doesn't seem to get worse. thanks steve |

Steve,
I'd say that your next step is to look at the two 'O' ring seals on the expansion tank cap. Do they look flat? Mine did, and when I renewed them I didn't have to top-up the coolant every few days just as you are having to do. I didn't get any evidence of loss either. Whilst you're there, can you confirm that you're NOT filling the expansion tank higher than the 'MAX' tab which should be visible inside the tank and almost at the bottom of it? After that, if no improvement, look in the 'V' at the clips on the straight plastic coolant pipe joining the water pump with the thermostat housing. Are they positioned fully outwards at both ends, i.e. touching the water pump and thermostat housings? If not, correct that. The other possibility is that you have an air lock dating back to the last time the cooling system was drained. Have you activated the instrument pack diagnostics whilst driving to monitor the actual coolant temperature? It should be stable in the low nineties, slowly rising to 100 degrees when you're stationary in traffic (air con. must be switched off). The fan should then reduce the temperature to 96 degrees. Can you report back on that please Steve. Lastly, forget about those gas testers. They always seem to give a positive answer when there are no other symptoms of gasket failure present (as is the case with your car as I have already pointed out). Simon

update
Tonight had the first sign of where the coolant is going.
Was running the car on tick over to get up to temp. got to 101c and fan kicked in but no sign of the coolant leek. Went down to around 85c then started to rise slowly back up. When it got back up to 100c again fan kicked in but this time coollant came out of the filler cap. Temp droped back down to below 90c .Took off the cap and waited for the temp to rise again. As it got up to 100c we seen the coolant rise spill out and drop down again. This only did this the once. we put the cap back on and did the same again. This time got to 100c fan kicked in then temp dropped to below 90c but no coolant came out. thanks steve |
