cambelts
I have a ZT 190 6 years old; had the cambelts replaced yesterday. Apparently this did not included tensioners or pullleys. I rang the manager [main dealer] and he said it wasn't necessary. My questions are a] is that true, b] are these bits made of plastic [in which case it seems a bit dicey] or steel? Does any one have any ideas.
Many thanks in advance Dave |

Hi daas and welcome to the forums,
When i had my done i had the tensioner changed as it was showing a lot of give in the belt. I don't think it is necessary but fr the cost of £40/50 i would of changed them to be safe. As you know Lates is our Cam belt man and this is what he says The components we replace whilst carrying out the cam belt change on a KV6 are : 3 belts 6 cam pulley bolts 2 cam cap seals 1 roller tensioner Hope that info helps. |

Normal recommended practice AFAIK is to replace the tensioner and the water pump as these are accessible whilst doing the belt change. It's disappointing these weren't done in your case as accessing the water pump and tensioner involves almost as much work and puts the engine at risk.

Tensioner replace is a v good idea - essential really as they are a wear item and a failed tensioner can make a horrible mess Not worth risking it imo

Rover didn't recomend the tensioners to be changed as part of cam belt change. I have however seen one fail although only one!

Hi just a quick question about the cambelt change, is it done on mileage or age of vehicle. I have a 52 MG ZT and its done 27,000miles so not too many but its in for its service and MOT next month just wondered if it needed it. Thanks

6 years or 90K miles whichever is the sooner, most folks like to get it done earlier. |
