Rover 75 Automatics - Any good?
I am thinking about buying a CDT auto but have never really had much experience of autos in general. SWMBO would be driving it most of the time.
Are the boxes reliable? What sort of mileage do they usually die at? Anything to look out for? Quick replies would be appreciated as I need to make the decision this afternoon! :xmas:

I seem to remember Keith saying they are reliable up to at least 100k. JDC's auto is well over that (?) and he gets good mpg and has only reported one minor glitch.
But you have one of the the few manual cars with a newly overhauled clutch and dmf - why do you want to change?! |

I'm not changing anything... it would pretty much be a case of "cold dead hands" to get the tourer off me!!
I am simply adding to the fleet. SWMBO likes driving mine too much and a cheap one has come up that needs a bit of work. If I can get it cheap enough I will get rid of the Mondeo and run 2 rovers... hurrah!

Talking autos in general - they are every bit as reliable as manual boxes - just tend to be more expensive to put right if they do go wrong.

A complete rebuild of a JATCO box will be of the order 800 - 900 squids. Compare that to clutch, cylinders and DMF. (Let alone a replacement manual box.)
IMO the Auto is a much better bet than a manual for the above reasons. Also tend to be very long lived and used in many different manufacturers cars. I don't recall any posts on here regarding trashed GETRAG box though. |

My auto is well over 100k now and has never missed a beat.
Clean fluid of the RIGHT sort is critical though. I won't be returning to a manual transmission. The auto just seems so right in a car as luxurious as the 75. |

My car is an 02 with 71K. I don't know when but the autobox has been apart in the past. It also seems to have sprung a leak from somewhere.

I beg to differ from the above posts, but I've heard [and seen!] some very bad things ref JATCO boxes. Wether the ones put in 75s are superior/better built etc, I do not know, but I've seen a banjaxed JATCO in a V6 Freelander after 15,000 miles! A taxi driver I know says the trade condemn them as the work of the devil. If rebuild costs are £8/900 which is pretty cheap for a modern auto, you do wonder how good the compenents are to start with.....

My auto 1999 95K now. changed oil when I got it a 80k.
The odd noticable change when cold, other than that seems to do what it should
