Default EGR Sludge / Inlet Manifold Gunge

Hi all,

I'm after a bit of advice on what to use to clean out my EGR valve and inlet manifold.

I've recently bought my diesel ZT off a lovely bloke, who only did 4000 miles per year.
The car is great, but needs a bit of TLC, and I found that the thermostat was stuck open. A common problem it seems.

So I fitted the in line thermostat modification, which works a treat. Really happy with that. Thanks to everyone and the advice and link to YouTube on how to do.

But, having removed the EGR and inlet manifold to make the thermostat fitting easier I found myself covered in black crud, I'm after cleaning it out.
I'm used to driving petrol cars, this is my very first diesel.
The EGR can be troublesome if it gets too clogged, so I'd like to perhaps start with that then move on to the inlet manifold.
Is there something which I can soak it in to remove the carbon deposits?

Many thanks in advance

Richard

Clean the EGR out with swafega and a tooth brush, carb cleaner is also good and lots of rags, the inlet manifold can be cleaned with oven cleaner foam, and left to soak for a minimum of 3 hours then jet washed out, remembering to remove the MAP sensor from the side of the manifold first and the rubber seals which can be used after.

You want it something like this inside after cleaning.

Ones I have prepared for our Nano meets

Don't forget to clean the MAP sensor as well do not poke any thing in the hole, again carb cleaner is good on a rag.

Very dirty time consuming work if carried out correctly, wear gloves and really old clothes as you will not get the black stuff off you or the clothes.

Many, many thanks!

The pics you've posted of the manifolds that you've cleaned, do you sell them?
As a newbie I'm trying to run to catch up at the moment!!
