Yes very good idea to take wheel off at least twice a year, mine come off every month because I like to clean the inside of the wheel, the inside collects more grime from the road salt, brake dust etc

That's what I do. It sounds excessive, but it really doesn't take much effort, and by doing them monthly the wheels and arches are so much easier to clean. Usually just an old wash mitt, some car shampoo, and a topping off with Collinite is all that's required to bring them up to new looking.

I had 4 new tyres fitted yesterday by tyresonthedrive.com. The reaction of the fitter was priceless when he saw the condition of the wheels and arches

. Oh, and all the DOT numbers now finish with "18"

Tyre life ain't what it used to be in terms of perishing.

Recently we've seen even the top brands perish before tread worn out within 4 years. .......... Dunlop Avons Michelin......
Disgraceful really.

Two of our ultra low miles show cars (one 75 the other ZTT) still have their original Dunlop 3000 and Continental 3 tyres on and they show absolutely no signs of perishing. They have been kept out of sunlight which helps.

A 1962 Minivan we've had in family since new still has some Michelin XZX tyres on from 1981 (remember them??).......still no perishing.

In last 10 years the manufacturers have definitely put some built in obsolescence into rubber compound so it ages quicker.

All part of the global greed we live in

I totally agree with you Jules, tyres just do not last long anymore. I have a couple of Michelin TRX tyres and a couple of Pirelli P7Fs in my shed, and all of them look new with no perishing what so ever. They're all from the early 90s too! They do feel a tad harder than they once were but not a crack to be seen.

I saw some on a Ford Fusion recently which the owner was happy to tell me were good as they had plenty of tread. I knew they did not cover many miles each year.

I secretly examined them and found they were the original fit from the production line and each had a crack through to the core the full circumference in the base of the tread.

It took some persuading but they now have a new set of tyres.

I totally agree with the current view of tyres perishing quickly.
My Copperleaf 75 had 4 new Dunlop tyres in 2015. Used only from April to September they have only seen tarmac for 2 years. Winter tyres see the other months. Certainly showing signs of small cracks.
15 and 16 date tyres on my Streetwise are beginning to crack with the 15’s being worse.
Just bought 4 unions with tyres. 2 are looking poor and only 3 years old. 4mm of tread so I will be changing them soon anyway.
Warned a neighbour that the rear tyres on her Clio were dangerous with cracks all over the tread and sidewalls. Date was 2007!
According to her Father they were fine..........

My FL2 just passed its 10th MOT test all passes with only with one advisory for the side step being insecure/loose bolt, that was before I became owner.

Anyways I was talking to the tester Monday and he said that, the DOT date on tyres is in the pipeline as part of the test, so cars with a DOT date past what it should be will be a fail, you can bet quite a few are going to get caught out if and when they bring it in.

This will be a blow to collectors many of whom have older tyres on.

Some new tyres start to b perish after 2 years these days.
Dunlop being one terrible brand. (proof here of perished tread after just 2 years)

Tyres of 10 years ago were of better quality rubber than used today.

Impurities seem to be added to limit the life or just poor quality materials used.
