Diesel thermostat

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if it's necessary to remove the water pump in order to replace the thermostat and housing on a 2002 diesel? The Haynes manual seems to say so.

As far as I can see the 4 torx screws should be able to be undone, the top pipe removed (how do you go about that by the way? I have undone the securing bolt and the bolt holding the pipe to the block but it won't budge) and then strictly speaking the thermostat housing should be able to be pulled away from the water pump. Is this not the case?

I would have thought removing the water pump would be more difficult. That said, I've not been able to undo all the torx screws so perhaps that's why the pump has to be removed.

Hi Frogwell and welcome to the club

I had my thermostat replaced by Lates a couple of months ago and I'm almost cretain only one component came out. The thermostat is part of this component. I'm sure nothing else was removed...

I'm sure someone will be along soon to clarify.

The thermostat is buried at the back of the engine and is part of the water pump assembly. I would suggest that you contact Lates as he's done a fair few now, as it's very involved to get to it....

I have attached a PDF which may be of help.
The Thermostat requires a Gasket Part No: PET100990 £5.39 + VAT
The Bolts are Part No: PYG100750 Bolt - M6 x 22 You require 4 @ £0.25 + VAT
The Thermostat it self is Part No: PEL100570 @ £28.49 + VAT replaced by PEL000090 no Price available for newer part number.

It is a pig to get to and do I found,
but Lates of course would have no Problem.

I presume that the prices are from Rimmers (or any X-part dealer?) ?

Yes, the Prices may be less at some Outlets but that is the XPart EPC Price Oct '08.
