Explain this then Please
During the summer I went from Crewe to Tonbridge (nr Sevenoaks) with 2 lady passengers & small amount of luggage. I returned .. same journey.. alone.
Speed southwards, almost all motorway. Consumption fill to fill 50 mpg. Return speed .. 50mph deliberately to test consumption. exactly 50 all the way... same route, M11/A14/M1/A50. and in 5th gear. Consumption.. using the same pumps .. another 50mpg Now I was expecting a vastly different figure for the return. ( Rons box fitted ). So wheres the consumtion advantage of going slow ??? |

Maybe to do with the fact that the 75 is a heavy car. Higher speed gives a bit more momentum for the uphill bits.
Have found with mine (albeit Petrol V6) that around 60/65 indicated gives the best MPG if I am in the mood for economy. Knock off about 5/6 MPH cos I know that my speedo is about 10% optimistic and you arrive at at a true figure of 55/60 mph. Funnily enough I think thats one of the speeds that are used for all the flattering MPG figures you see in car brochures. Must be coincidence  |

I bought a tunit box before Rons came out and have read before about how the box creates havoc with the computer readout. I have tested mine on 3 occassions with the comp showing averages of 29,38 and 44 MPG. Each time I double checked by the reliable brimming method and guess what the MPG figures were almost the same each time, up to half a mile out.

my 2002 CDT auto with 135k on the clock regularly gives me 45mpg. In fact last weekend travelled on a round trip of 478 miles mainly A14 & A1 some at 65-70mph and some (on way home) between 75-80, but some town stuff too and afterwards filled up with 48.2l which is a typical return of 45mpg.
I always use Millers additive, never get black smoke (which was usual under load pre Millers) and it runs like a dream. I love my motor!! |

Visited my parents in Inverness over New Year, leaving Sittingbourne in Kent on the 27th December and returning on the 2nd January. Route was M2, A2, M25, M1, M6 (+toll road), M74, M73, M80, A9, so all motorways and mostly dual carriageway. On the basis of noting the mileage between fills (to the pump fuel gun cutting out), I got 44mpg on the northbound trip and 47mpg on the soutbound trip on a distance of 620 miles each way. That was with two adults, a toddler and a moderate luggage load.
Car is a 2002 tourer CDT without mods and I am wary of the in tank fuel pump issue so don't let the car get below a quarter. Last edited by EnEnGee; 18th January 2007 at 13:46.. |

Range Rovers with the 2.5 BMW diesel drop down to 20mpg doing that according to a neighbour. At the end of the day I think you get the consumption to match your driving style and locaton at the time. |
