Default Frankfurt the last 3 days

Really surprised at the number of Mercs with steel wheels i saw when in Frankfurt - i thought they only did alloys - also some of the wheel arches on the beige merc taxis where a sight to behold - probably an MOT fail here.

They've all got their winter tyres on. I was told by the guy I bought my ZT from (who was Polish and had driven the ZT to Poland and back through Germany) that because the rules on having winter tyres are so strict in Germany, people fit them with steel wheels so the police can see that they've got them on and don't stop them to check! It's obviously also cheaper than forking out for a full set of extra alloys.

Spot on. In the event of an accident in wintry weather your insurance will be invalidated if you do not have winter or all season tyres fitted.

Also, steels are cheaper than alloys. Most people buy the snow tires as a package mounted on the steel wheels. Then they can do the spring and fall wheel changes themselves.

Actually, it is common for tire businesses to offer storage for the set you are not using for a small flat rate charge when they do the spring and fall changes for you.

I had a vw Passat in Slovakia in October and the hire company had already put on winter rubber... the friends we were visiting all had steels with winter tyres in their garages..
