intermittant starting !!!!!

hi guys i need your help.....
i`ve got a rover 75 2.0 diesel on a 51 plate with 137k on the clock. a few months ago i did a clutch change and full service inc. fuel and air filter, pcv valve/filter and oil etc.... thats the borin part but may be relevant

1. stiff gear change, it was fine before i changed the clutch but now,and since the change, it wont stay in 2nd and 4th gear, needs to be held in

i think it could be the cables but dont really know !!

2. the car has ,in the last few days, began starting as and when it feels like it. all depending on where i park (uphill/downhill etc..) and amount of fuel in tank, over a quarter , no problems. if fuel light is on sometimes it refuses to start for a while then ,after repeated trying, it fires but splutters and wont rev properly, then it smokes a bit too !!

i`m thinking fuel pump, but not sure where to start !!

sorry if i waffled on a bit but i wanted to cover everything from the off

any advice or diagnostics would be greatly appreciated ...............
