Ditto. I'd had enough of school at 14, I went & got an apprenticeship at the local engineering firm (tool setter), I told them I was 16
The school board came looking for me 6 months later & said I had to finish my schooling until 15 years of age. the manager at the engineering company gave me a right rollicking for giving him a false age as he was kicking my backside out the door he said come back when your 15 & the jobs still yours I never went back to school, I did a lot of fishing I was never destined to be an academic but I've done OK

Not having a degree does not make anyone a dunce mate. My brother has a first class honours degree...my brother in law has two degrees and a doctorate...
Would not let either of them touch my cars mechanicals!

Today, plumbers, electricians and other good time served tradesmen earn far more than I do as a teacher.

I for one value all occupations equally. Nearly all vital...not all can do them...

It is a pity society in general was allowed to go down the ' degree'for everything attitude. Not good or desired. One of the main hubs of education when I was in my late teens was the Kingsway Tech. A large college solely based on trades. Mechanics, painters & plumbers and electricians all passed through here. Many of my school mates went there. Most did apprenticeships having day realise to there one day a week. No longer exists. Its last use was as a college for media studies, drama and dance!
No offence to that meant ( well only a bit ) but good grief! How wrong is that being shown to have been now?

So I value non degree folk....so do most sensible people.

It is sad the pressure on young people now to get a degree but there just aren;t the jobs, or rather quality jobs, to walk into when leaving school, the way there was when we was young.

I've done ok too for not having a degree but the competition is so stiff these days it's deffo advantageous to have one.

My boyfriend has a degree and is rather sexy so my lack of degree hasn't held me back in that respect either

ETA grammar mistook was deliberate.

i agree..

and everyone thinks the degree is the route to a good job.. especially the young.. but alas its not the case.. its amazing how many people struggle to find the job they want or expect to have once they leave university etc.. it doesn't help with the attitude of lots of young people nowadays either..

However, certain jobs do require a degree, but lots have it a s a nice to have with experience and a trade the priority..

and there are lots of students at our college doing degrees and training courses who I too wouldn't let loose on any of my cars.. let alone aircraft - which they are training to work on..
