With the car on the ground, one bolt thread is only an inch or so away from the 3rd coil up on the spring (n/s only). I can feel gouge marks on the spring so they've definitely been clouting each other.

Not sure if this is causing the clonk we're looking for - it might be, it might not.

NB. Bolt not exactly visible due to strut blocking line of sight - so use your hand to feel for gouge marks on outer edge of spring (engine side not the wheel side).

Bernard - there's no noise on turning steering wheel. Are you sure strut bearings can't cause clonking when car is going straight ahead over bumps?
I suppose that they could be noisy if they have broken up, mine were only clonking on turning but replacement did not stop the bumpy road problem.

I'm going to look for the projecting bolts on mine tomorrow, sounds very likely to me as we have found nothing else so far.

The earth bolts are unnecessarily long Bernard, hence the one described above clouts the spring when the latter is compressed.

It's certainly a contributory factor but it might not be the sole cause of the 'bump clonk'. The easy way to check is reverse the bolt so the head is on the wheel arch side (otherwise something won't be earthed) - I haven't tried that yet but I will.

PS. This assumes the bolt will go in the other way round without clobbering the battery box!

Btw, I'm beginning to wonder if the bolt is the cause of nearside front springs snapping. There's enough of a gouge on my spring to (possibly) cause a weakness in the metal. So:

Q1: Has anyone got a pic of a snapped front spring? A snap at the third coil up would point to the bolt as the cause.

Q2: Has anyone ever had an offside front spring snap (there are no offending bolts on that side)?

Agree Bernard
Any top strut bearing should utilise a tapered bearing race, to give more surface contact area and therefore less load on each roller.
Probably a "cost thing" again

Annoying knock......tok..........tok.......tokety....... tok cured.

Probably not related in any way to Simon's problem.

The plastic finisher on the front of the rear parcel shelf, released the rear seat back and folded forward, the finisher is in two sections, held by plastic clips. Where the two halves meet seemed to have a similar noise when when tapped. Rolled a small piece of cloth into a tube and inserted behind the finisher. No more knocking noise. Cheapest fix I have ever done, took months to track it down, finally bit the bullet and took a passenger out with me, he was convinced it was something loose under the rear seat cushion. Close but no cigar.

Silence is golden.

Oi you lot - stop nicking my thread .

All this seat-type stuff should be under an Annoying Seat Problem thread, not the Annoying Knock thread.

As Captain Jack Sparrow said - Stop blowing holes in my ship!
