Fear not , they should be back for a while until all 12 397s are in service.
I believe they will be on the liverpool to Glasgow services for a while and should be in 6 car formation

My wife and I are up and down to the Lakes quite frequently, lot of friends down there. On one hand I prefer the TP services but on the other hand the 185s are cattle trucks, ok for commuting but not for distance. I know a lot of the drivers who work the TP Edinburgh-Manchester services and they've been talking about these new units for a long time.

First day of driving today and boy are they quick , much smoother and quieter than the 185 and 350 fleet.
As usual 2 toilets out of use , and nobody's used them yet

I used to commute Malton to York initially on two-car 158's (sometimes replaced with a one-car 153 at peak times). The 185s were a welcome upgrade. They now have five car MK5 + class 68s on this route but I have yet to travel on them.

That cab looks a lot simpler and more spacious than the Desiro 350 me and my son had a tour of a few year back. Buttons everywhere in that thing!

Definitely a lot less buttons on these
Nearly everything is done on the computer system, all the faults , information, HVAC, lighting , traction and braking systems.
It has 2 computers running together in tandem.

Unusually someone has thought about the layout on these and made it very easy to use , almost unheard of on the railway

Technology is all well and good but at what point are we relying on it too much. I know a driver with GB Railfreight contracted to cover the Caledonian Sleeper services. The new mk 5 sleeper cars know where they are (!) and the GPS/location software automatically only unlocks an appropriate number of doors at the shorter platforms in the north of Scotland. Staff are wondering when some poor bugr will go head first out of a door off the platform that wasn't supposed to be able to open.

We have the same system, it uses GPS and wheel rotation to confirm location, and a separate system for doors called ASDO .
The only problem with the system I can see is if it is not sure where it is on the network, you can open all doors so if you missed a stop mark and stop short it will let you open all 5 carriages even if one is off the platform.
It should be a fool proof system but the blame will lie with the fool pushing the buttons.
Leaving up to the guards was a much safer system.
