Might be worth trying to see if you can force the android portion of the unit into recovery mode (you've nothing else to lose).

Press and hold power /volume button until it turns off (listen for a little pop from the speakers)
Release the power button and listen for another pop as it powers back up, then hold power button in again.

Default Comet unit

OK I've just been to try that.
Ignition on (unit buttons illuminated)
Press and hold the power/volume button.
After about 10 seconds the lights on the unit flash 3 times and then remain on (whilst I'm pressing the power/volume button).
Tried a pen on the reset button for 20 seconds - lights go out and come back on when I remove the pen.
No sounds at all from speakers

I think it is stuffed

You might not hear anything from the speakers, all depends on how the circuit board is designed.
The lights flashing is a good sign (or a bad one as it makes it more likely the screen has gone) that its not completely dead.

XDA-developers also advises the following sequence, I think you've pretty much done it all though

1) Hold power button until unit turns off and lights flashes.
2) Let go and then press the power button again. This somehow shuts off the unit since it would normally just reboot after releasing the button it seems.
3) Press the power button again to turn it on. It should hopefully go into recovery.

Default dead Comet

Thanks. I tried your instructions but still didn't recover.
Off for a new Pioneer I think
