I was in the exact same position 6 weeks ago...

My daily shed which I’ve owned for 3 years now and also my first 75 purchase is now off the road. The clutch went a few weeks back for the 2nd time. It’s only two years old and covered about 28k and it’s gone. The clutch kit is a Borg and beck by Matt and fitted at a local place up here with slave and master changed also. Master is bone dry as are all pipes which means it could only be leaking at the slave. I’ve decided to call it a day and have decided to break it to keep my other two going. A hard decision but I think it’s the right one for me....
It seems that the diesel manuals suffer from these more then the other variants and even more so once already been replaced previously so not sure if it’s down to poor parts or poor workmanship or both..l.
I’ll never know but I’ve made my decision, anyway...
I’m fortunate at the moment that I’m nit heavily reliant on a car now as I practically work on my door step so I bought a ZTT 180 to treat myself.
But, if business picks up further in future for me, I will consider a new car for work purposes and keep the Rovers for the weekend.

You're right Ravinder, you do read a lot about early clutch cylinder failures on diesel manuals. In my case the slave and clutch kit (and I think DMF) were replaced at 90k by the previous owner ...I have a bill - he paid over £1200 at the time!

I'm now on 160k and I had hoped the slave would have lasted longer than 70k, but on reading your experience that doesn't sound all that bad.

The master cylinder as far as I can tell is the original and has never been changed (the previous owner kept meticulous paperwork), so I was not entirely surprised when that needed replacing.

I'm hoping by buying all LUK kit, this won't be a problem again for the rest of her lifetime.

An interesting question that more of us are going to face.
It's not really mine, being my wife's, and it's great fun at the weekend, but I think our 75 would be a handful as a daily driver. I can live with it left in parts for a while if I need to when I'm doing something with it. It's in great condition and low mileage, but it's still passed to the 'nice to have' not 'must have' stage in its life.
The other people who commented have a point: you never know, but I've bought enough cheap cars recently to know good ones exist. They might not be as fun or equipped, but if you need it for work, then that's important for a low stress existence.

Just heard from my mechanic again... he recommends changing the DMF at the same time. I think it was replaced at 90k and I'm now on 160k (I will check paperwork when I get home). It's a significant extra cost (£300) for the part. Any thoughts?

If it was replaced at 90.000 I doubt it needs changing again at 160,000, I have only ever heard of one DMF being changed on these diesel, I am sure the more experienced members who fit clutches for a living will tell you the same ?

I've recently had to have a clutch change on my car. I asked the mechanic about my DMF and he told me not to bother, as the ones on these cars are so bullet proof he's never had to do one. (My car has done 110k so far on the original part)

For comparison, you're lucky to get 40k out of a Mondeo one.

Thanks Steve/David.... that's reassuring to hear. I will check paperwork to make sure though.

As above. It is very, very unlikely that a DMF would go after 90k miles.

Is the mechanic suggesting this based on some symptoms/analysis or just as insurance policy?
