I think it is probably saying glowplugs ON which means just that, it replaces the orange light that non message centre packs have.
Start the car when the message goes off.

Or before really, even in winter the diesel normally starts without without waiting for them anyway: although I'm a bit of a pedant and always wait when the engine is stone cold like it is first thing in the morning. (the orange light is still there on the fuel gauge as well - at least I thought that was the glowplug light). You've probably got a couple of pixels missing from the 'n' of 'on' making it look like 'or'.

I think you'll find that is the low fuel light as the guage "starts up"

BUT I've always wondered if I should listen to those dire warnings about burning the plugs out if I start the engine before they do go out?

What dire warnings? Besides they switch off as soon as you turn the starter motor and stay off when the engine is running - they'll get hot anyway won't they?

P.S I've now done 60k in mine and there's no problem with the glow plugs at 163k miles... touch wood.

They can stay on after the engine starts as part of the post heat strategy, and they shouldn't overheat as each one is fitted with a control coil.

Thanks chaps – I’ve read it here and there over the years. I’m not sure it doesn't even say it in the manual somewhere.

Don’t know about the post heat strategy! But it sounds like the plugs know what they’re doing
