Default A Little Advice Please??

Hi there folks, very recently found myself at Shotts Motor Auction and came home with a 51 plate 2.0 V6 Connieseur Automatic. It has done 116k and is in lovely condition, and the book has been stamped up until a year ago. Apart from a good service, what else should I be looking out for on this car at its age? Also, I have read that the car is underpowered and I find it very flat on rising roads. Is this normal? Is there anything I can to with it to improve performance and efficiency? Thanks in advance.

John

2.0 is not the quickest on the road but there are things to check to ensure there are no future problems and performance is maximised.

VIS motors, do a search situated on the inlet manifold and if failed have an effect on power and economy

Plenum drains do a search if they block the ECU doesn't know how to swim

Check rad fan is working on slow speed, to do this start car and select demist in the cab. The radiator fan should run, if not it needs attention

Thermostat is a wesk point, known to leak, remove engine acoustic cover and look into the V of the engine, look for water staining ( usually orange) if any signs then stat could be a problem.

timing belts should be changed at 6 yr or 90k whichever is sooner, cost of this is around £550.

Edit: watch out for 2diesels, he follows people around

No expert on V6s but Vis motors can cause poor performance but I'm sure Mr Stoctake will be along to advise soon other than that check cooling fan operation & plenum drains.

The plenum is a box fing that lies across the front of the windscreen under the bonnet.. The cars ECU lives in there..

The (blocked) drains can be found approx 5 inches below the water level on the average 75...

To gain access to them do a search on this forum, there is loads of info around..

Cheers guys. I found them little drain pipes last night by accident when I was parked on a slight incline and water was coming from under the car, had a look down and noticed the two pipes. You can tell I have never owned a 75 before. Would I be wrong in thinking water coming out means its not blocked?

That means they're ok but that may be just the 2 upper ones which can be seen when you open the bonnet, there are however 2 more in the bottom of the void under the wiper panel & it's VITALLY IMPORTANT that you keep at least one clear, easiest way is to remove the detachable grille on the N/S & pull out the plastic shield & grope around under the ECU & you should find one there, the other is under the servo & is a proper swine to get to

Nope, right area wrong pipes, the ones you can see hanging down are the aircon drains. you need to remove the driverside scuttle panel at the base of the windscreen under the bonnet. Take a torch and shine it into hole below to check it is dry, this is the lower plenum area
