Thanks for that Rick. Still think it best to stick with what it says in the handbook to unless one clears any change with the insurance company.

Thanks all for the various tid bits of info. Whilst rummaging around in the boot for high up water leaksI remembered the car has a full size spare and the alloy is 7.5x17 so will go with the wider tyres as specced by the handbook. The 45 width tyres are certainly (annoyingly) cheaper so it is tempting to go with them but I am a stickler for handbook specs. I also like the heavy waited steering. So will bide my time and watch out for tyre offers.
