Somehow, somewhere, I smell the faint odour of rodents. It's not someone trying to deflect other media-grabbing headlines of the wrong kind is it? Surely not.

Being able to drive in Naples or Athens (or Mumbai, Dehli...) without having an accident just shows how reckless a driver you must be and it could be argued need to be taken off the roads. |

At the risk of interrupting a good rant, the article states that it will only apply to drivers with severe medical conditions, and it is not a complete driving ban in any case. If this is correct (and I share Simondi's scepticism about the source of the information!), is anyone really going to argue that placing limits on those who have are unfortunate enough to suffer certain serious conditions is a bad thing?

I can think of quite a few folks of many different ages who have a serious condition that impairs their driving skills.

reading an article about this last week i believe it is being proposed by the I.A.M., or a similar road safety group, and they said a poll of elderly drivers shows a good majority in favour ???

Our Grandson recently had his second birthday and went to see the Peppa Pig show.
He thoroughly loved it....... But being a bit more serious aren't we all now avoiding, for want of a better word, stereotypes? Isn't it all about the individual, their skills, attributes, talents, experience etc. etc. That being the case how is it reasonable to simply say someone of a certain age can or can't do something just because of their age? And if it's about a "serious condition" what definition is being used of serious? A serious medical condition may have little or no effect upon someone's ability to drive but will kill or severely incapacitate them at some point. That's medically serious. A minor medical condition can have a huge effect upon driving ability. Perhaps something like a migraine or vertigo attack. And surely that should apply to all ages that can potentially drive? If it's a genuine proposal then I predict an absolute minefield of ifs, buts and maybes. Last edited by AndyN01; 24th November 2021 at 16:20.. |
