We know there are nasty people about so stay away from it. There are those that get a kick out of being nasty.

Good point - and one that I follow by not using “social media” that allows such behaviour - which let’s face it - this toxic tripe is usually posted by individuals with Napoleon Complex.

Best thing people can do with Facebook, Twitter etc. Is to just delete your account.

It is all horrible, and designed to engage you for ever. We have no idea of the long term effects of this stuff - it is much more revolutionary than, say a smartphone.

I don't see anything so wrong with obscure forums (like this). The big player platforms are on another level entirely.

My "Social Media" consists of here and Detailing World.

Both are for folks to help each other out with practical and technical expertise and share/discuss the views/banter of people with a common interest.

Never been on FB, Twitter, Instagram etc. and never will judging by what I hear about the antics that happens on them.

That's exactly what I do Ian, and it works quite nicely. Problems can arise, however, when someone joins a Facebook "Group". Other posters still won't have access to your main Facebook page, but they can see and comment on posts made within the group. For that reason, I make a point of only joining groups that are either "private", or have an active and effective admin for moderation purposes. As a result, I have so far (touch wood), come across very little trolling on Facebook. It's out there for the unwary though!

Same here.

I was really pleased to see that the new Apple I-Phone has a feature that can block all tracking content from the likes of Facebook and other social media sites, and that 80% of potential purchasers said they would enable the facility. A certain Mr. M. Zuckerberg has thrown a hissy fit as it will also bring into public scrutiny the modus operandi of social media sites and how they generate their vast incomes.

My sons recommended this - easy to do.

Go to Settings, click on Safari and scroll down to Privacy & Security and turn on Prevent Cross-site Tracking.

This means you cannot be tracked from one site to another.

I believe this particular feature relates to the latest I-Phone that was launched just a few days ago.

I've never had an I-Phone, only Galaxy's.

Anyway, I hope the boycott makes the social media giants sit up and take more responsibility for what appears on their platforms.

I don't blame the trolls, they only exist to have an effect wherever they are allowed. Not unlike a persistent rash.

The opportunities to get an airing instead of a smack in the gob are now everywhere - 'social' media only makes it seem like they have multiplied.

Blame the owners of such channels - they are only concerned with money, hang everything else.

I've never been tempted to bring anything like that junglement mess into my home or life, can manage perfectly well without digging into the bowels of hate.

Sooner put more effort into nurturing true friendliness than suffer the consequences of what's 'popular'.

When i was a kid I learned very quickly there were a lot of nasty, rude, bullying, dishonest people and I consequently made a point of avoiding them, and the areas they were to be found. It worked most of the time, not always but mostly. Four day ban- that will make all the differnce. Chris.S.

Another thought occurs. To 'donate' is meant to be a measure of personal sacrifice, especially when acres of publicity in your own medium is the carrier of the news.

The motives would be more believable and less than looking like an attempt at sanitisation of a public image if they were anonymous. Millions 'donated' to emotive subjects, when you have countless billions, is akin to the Widow's Mite parable. Altruistic it ain't.

Oh, and the countries and politicians 'donating' public funds owe the largesse to their citizens.
