When I was quite small it was Wagon Train that freaked me out. When the indians came I hid behind the sofa. Psycho was a film I found very scary as a child.

Jaws freaked me out when I was a kid - the bit where the head comes out of the hole in the bottom of the boat.
As a teenager I found the Hellraiser films pretty scary. Horror films now aren't a patch on what they used to be, although I did enjoy the Saw series of films.

'Threads' will probably stick in my mind as the most haunting thing I remember watching

The film that freaked me out, in a nice way, was Destination Moon. My father took me to the pictures (the only time he did!) when Mum was in hospital.
1950 and I was 7, it started in me a total awe in all things Space. The Eagle comic became vitally important to me. When an astronaut started to float off the rocket, because his magnetic boots were not flat on the shell, I swear I felt I was rising off the seat. I found the DVD on Amazon 6 years ago and now relive my early years spent in the aftermath of a war. By the way, today is the 75th anniversary of the day the bomb under the map table didn’t kill Hitler.

I have to admit a liking for Japanese horror films, mentioned The Grudge, there's also The Ring 1 & 2. For God's sake avoid the newer American remakes though. |

The Exorcist did it for me - whenever the camera started moving towards the girl's bedroom, you knew there was something nasty in there - including the green projectile vomiting and her head turning through 360°. My mate and I had hands over our faces, whilst our wives were laughing and smiling.
When we came out of the cinema (fleapit more like!) the Samaritans were standing outside, offering their help to people who had been disturbed by the film

I can see why the tree film freaked you out ronnie...never heard of it so I followed the link ..On 12 minutes when the "Mini Phil Neville " turned up , I switched it off
salems lot when the Glick ? kid floated up to the window was (at the time ) the scariest thing id seen on tv ..watched years later and its not so bad ..but for its time it was really good.

When I was serving as a prison officer in Bristol prison they showed the Texas chain saw massacer as the Sunday film, it was so frightening the inmates were screaming to get back to their cells.

"the Thing", the original 1982 John Carpenter version. When the severed head sprouts legs and scuttles off........
When you consider there was no CGI in those days and all special effects were physical models that and many of the other scary effects were pretty impressive. |
