The sound of a CDTi carankshaft pulley failing.
I had visited a tyre shop to get new fronts fitted and all was well when I parked up.
Then the staff member went to pull my car into the fitting bay. I was sitting in the waiting area and thought 'what in god's name is that racket.' I knew it was the crankshaft pulley (that was on Monday) and all is now sorted along with a new MOT ticket.

Yes, best described I think as 'clacking'.

Been there as well, mine started doing it only when the AC was on (making me think it was the AC compressor or its clutch failing).
It then started doing it all the time and the penny dropped what it really was.

Hi Paul.
Did you have it rectified at the same time if so hopefully you made asked then to fit a corteco pulley only, any other make and you will have trouble very shortly down the line. If not make sure you either purchase one your self and get a garage to fit it, or fit it yourself not an easy job though as they are a nightmare to get off. Also you would need this tool below to hold the pulley https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-75-...7/283506806553 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FOR-ROVER...Y/151487666547

Been wondering if my 1800-2000 roughness/vibration is this pulley getting near its end ? , got another corteco in the wings after letting Eric from Belgium have my first .

Hi Steve, after I had they tyres fitted it was already booked for the MOT on the Tuesday, but they cancelled it while I waited for parts. Said he wouldn't give it revs on the emmissions while the pulley was in such a state (after only a few miles it was totally borked. I tried Matt for a pulley but he was short on stock so I got the aftermarket part from Rimmers (couldn't afford the genuine one!!!) and the garage (ex-Rover mechanic) fitted the pulley (with new bolt and washer) along with new belts and then MOTed it. With the crappy weather and the difficulty of getting it undone I decided to let the garage do it. Just a note on the garage... the owner is thinking of selling up at age 77 after 52 years (and his father 20 years before that) and still working. The Rover chap has been there 20 years and they have all become friends to me. He says he's going to sell up and retire at the end of the month but he's still taking work on into July.
